Hackwing: A Square Blackwing Pencil
Graphite and wood; a pencil is a very simple thing. However, there is nothing quite like the Blackwing pencil’s iconic quality and design.
Four times a year, special Blackwing pencil sets (called "Blackwing Volumes") are released that celebrate creative people, events, and ideas. I decided to make my own set to pay homage to Norm Abram, called the "Blackwing Volume 936", a reference to the 936 square foot workshop Norm used while filming most of "The New Yankee Workshop".
Norm Abram is a distinguished woodworker that is part of an esteemed few that inspired a generation of makers and DIYers. His attention to detail and knowledge of all the aspects of good woodworking practices makes him revered and beloved among the woodworking community. To mirror his commitment to craftsmanship, I designed this pencil to showcase some of his tenets.
Every woodworker knows that to end up with a quality project, you have to start with quality materials. That means lumber that is square, straight, and true; these pencils showcase that notion with their unique square profile. Likewise, the adage "measured twice, cut once" is something you have to ignore just once to appreciate, so I've included a debossed 6" rule on each pencil so you'll always have a ruler close at hand.
I also wanted to see how I could make this video stand out, so I used a very narrow aspect ratio. Everything was filmed with this horizontal vantage in mind. It might be cool or annoying, but it was something fun to try to work into a video.
*** This is not at all sponsored or endorsed by Blackwing. A "Hackwing" uses spare parts from a Blackwing pencil as an enhancement for other pencils. This allows for customizations and modifications that are suited to specific applications.

Patio Chairs
Переглядів 15 тис.3 роки тому
2020 has been a hell of a year. I've started and finished many DIY projects, but none that felt good enough to show off. I finally decided to come up with something challenging and interesting, something that would test my skills and add some new ones. These chairs were, at first, an exercise in understanding grain direction: Respect the grain! I also wanted to try my hand at various joinery. N...
Mechanical Rotary Counter
Переглядів 27 тис.4 роки тому
I've always been fascinated with mechanical counters; such intricate mechanisms in a small package. How do they work?! Here I make a rotary dial counter with soup cans and plywood! The magic lies in a special gear that has 8 teeth on one half and 4 teeth on the other half along with a matching gear with just one notch; this allows the rotors to iterate rather than spin freely. Knork makes a beautiful set of utensils, but the storage solutions they offer are terrible. Extendable Scissor Lamp
Переглядів 414 тис.4 роки тому
No workshop is complete without a shop light. I built a scissor mechanism so it can extend and swivel over the workbench; I even added some braided lamp cord for that industrial look. It's amazing what you can build with some scrap wood! Mounting the lamp required a unique solution so that the lamp could tuck away when not needed, but also peek around the corner to be able to extend the entire ...
Enclosed Raised Beds

Now that we are in Texas, it's time to get that farmhouse, rustic feel into a project! These enclosed, raised beds will make gardening really enjoyable. Trying out some Hugelkultur! 100,000 subscribers. Wow. This project really is a love letter to the beginnings of this channel and hopefully captures the spirit of how I document projects. The very first video I made was the creation of a woodsh...

SkilSaw Mod Upgrade
Переглядів 16 тис.5 років тому
Don't try this at home! Never modify power tools, you may seriously injure yourself! That said, this is a pretty stupid design and I think Skilsaw should look at it and reconsider the ergonomics. 99% of the time, you want the blade guard to function as intended. Plunge cuts are not the most common use of a circular saw, but when you do need to do them, having control of the blade guard is key; ...

Toilet Tray

There are many methods to curve wood; there is no easy way to drill holes into curved wood, so I just drilled the holes first! A toilet tank tray was a good exercise in working with curves, and a good excuse to use my new mortising machine! It gives the bathroom a nice rustic look and add some extra storage space to the bathroom. ► Enable closed captions for commentary ► GIF image gallery of th...

Ragtime Piano Pedal Mod
Переглядів 2,1 млн5 років тому
The Beatles used a piano called the Mrs. Mills piano that had that tinny sound. I've had this small upright piano for a while and I've always wanted to add a pedal to give it that similar ragtime/honky tonk/tack piano sound. In the biz, it's called a "mandolin rail" and it's a pretty simple modification that gives a really unique sound to the instrument. If you haven't heard of the Mrs. Mills p...
Forging a Chisel
Переглядів 21 тис.5 років тому
I needed a chisel, so I decided to forge one myself! Some hex bar was the perfect shape, and using my mini keg forge made the rest pretty easy! A pretty simple DIY, but then again, a chisel isn't exactly rocket science. The heat treating kind of worried me, I wasn't sure what type of steel the hex bar was (what the carbon content was) and it's much thicker than a knife blade so I wasn't sure ho...
Workbench with Pop Up Bench Dogs
Переглядів 700 тис.5 років тому
Starting the new year in the new shop, I am in desperate need of work surfaces. This simple workbench was the first thing on my DIY projects list for this year. I don't particularly need a workbench for hand tool woodworking, but the idea of bench dogs always seemed useful, even just for clamping purposes. So I decided t...
Lumber Rack with Scrap Storage

Shop upgrade! I'm still working on getting the shop built and organized, the next step was getting the lumber off the floor and stacked onto the wall. Here I make a DIY lumber rack out of scrap wood. Wow! as one that has a couple of modal scaled (G scale C modal) and crafted with gourd bodies,,, fun to play the 2 for C stuff... and collected street-sweeper brush tines from our streets and made a few of my own sound makers... I have wanted to remake a Racha that i made of 1.5" ABS pipe ... many shallow cuts across the pipe made rhythms when a stick drags across the ridges... and i love your finger joint jig which would work... I make the cuts with 3-4mm ridges but some broke over the years so i must spend a day making another with wider ridges. There's 3 set of cuts, they join at their edges.. - Middle: 3 even cuts -Right:2 cuts ,1 uncut -Left:1 cut, 2 uncut... something like 1/2 pipe wall exists where matching cts meet to keep some support. Almost 1/2 the circumference, for all so 50deg each(?) and one rotates to change rhythms while stroking ( a rain stick inside adds more) Thanks for showing your tine material choices, tuning jig, and how to get tuned; not to mention that you crafted a beauty! Solid crafting too.

The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

What an incredible piece of word working. After listening to you play, I find it rather curious how the middle of the range has a more prolonged resonance than the bottom. I wonder if an addition can be added akin to a vibraphone so the low end isn’t so dampened.

So, I bought a calimba from a souvenir shop once, a painted coconut shell and some flattened nails (the autocorrect knew that I was going to write ‘nails’ as soon as I wrote the ‘n’ - the autocorrect knows about kalimbas) anyway, it was not tuned chromatically and I couldn’t play it. So I just fiddled with the nails until I got the do-re-mi… . This is a far less interesting story than I initially thought. Press send
